- 1613: Trinity College and the town did a deal,
creating Parker's Piece as common pasture
- 1616: The town petitioned the King for city status, to match Oxford

- 1631: The Earl of Bedford and promoters known as the Adventurers started
Fen drainage operations, in spite of protest from the town and the University
1641-1650
- 1642: Civil War began.
Cromwell (one of the town's MPs) strengthened the castle and destroyed
all the bridges but the Great Bridge
- 1649: Interregnum; King Charles executed

1661-1670
- 1661: Isaac Newton arrived at Trinity
- 1663: Henry Lucas (MP for the University) bequeathed land earning £100 per year to the University,
which was used to found a lectureship in mathematics - the Lucasian Chair
- 1669: Isaac Barrow resigned the Lucasian chair in favour of Isaac Newton
